It was fucking horrible.
Today my classmate asked me to fill the tires of his Benz at a gas station while he was getting something to eat. I got to drive his A Class for only about 5 minutes but that was enough. Where should I start?
The steering: absolutely horrible and didn’t give any feedback.
The gearbox: manual, a fucking mess.
The brakes: I almost hit another car.
This experience made me appreciate my parent’s Golf Plus.

Is this the one that handles worse than a Trabant?

The ‘sandwich’ type of floor is weird to get used to.

The only positive thing about this car is the good visibility. But that’s about it.

Fun fact: The same program that spawned the A-Class also spawned the first gen smart “city coupe”. As such, both cars suffered from similar engineering blunders and they both failed the Elk Test in amazing fashion.

I feel bad even relaying this, but there is a Princess Di joke involving the A-class.
That is as far as i will take it. Google can do the rest for those so inclined.

That was a really bad era for Daimler Benz.

Driving the 1st generation of these, I always felt that the roof was about to knock me on the head ... and I’m not even tall!

Yep. Same here. The floor of these is relatively high.

“But come on! It’s Gemarn! It’s a Mercedes! German cars are better than everything cause they’re the bestest and can do no wrong. They’re made for the Autobahn so they’re super safe for when you crash at 200 mph. It’s way better than anything America or Japan has to offer.”
-German car fanboy.

Oops. I can understand you though. I lust after shitty American cars that we can’t get in Europe. Afaik the first gen A Class was sold in Mexico.
